Deputy Minister of Energy asks Dongfang to increase work on Malagarasi power project

Deputy Minister of Energy, Ms. Salome Makamba has inspected the implementation of the Malagarasi power generation project (49.5 MW) being implemented in Uvinza District in Kigoma Region where she has expressed her dissatisfaction with the speed of implementation.

While in Mazungwe Village in Uvinza District, March 07, 2026, Ms. Salome has inspected various parts of the project including the construction of embankments and river diversion, the construction of a building to operate the machinery and workers’ camps where she did not find enough workers as the contract dictates.

As a result, the Deputy Minister of Energy has instructed the contractor, the Chinese company Dongfang, to ensure that it increases workers, work equipment and within one month to have built a workers’ camp.

She has asked the Contractor to submit a new schedule for the implementation of the work.

She has instructed the Malagarasi project managers from the Consulting Contractor Company and TANESCO to move to the project area within one month to be able to manage the project closely.

“The President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has instructed the Ministry of Energy to generate 8000 megawatts of electricity by 2030, we will not allow anyone to hinder us in achieving these goals. The contractor must ensure that you complete the work by October 2027 as directed by the contract”, Ms. Salome has stressed.

She has asked the Consulting Contractor, Multiconsult Norge AS of Norway and Norplan from Tanzania, to ensure that they manage the contractor properly so that the project is completed on time and to the required standards.

The Uvinza District Commissioner, Ms. Dinah Mathamani, has stated that the district administration will closely monitor the instructions given by the Ministry so that the contractor carries out the work according to the contract.

The representative of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy (Electricity and Renewable Energy), Engineer Edson Ngabo, said that the implementation of the Malagarasi project should have been at 28% but has reached 23%.
