Women from Mining Commission Support Kidney Patients at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital

Dodoma: As the country prepares to mark the International Women’s Day celebrations, women from the Mining Commission have demonstrated compassion and solidarity by assisting kidney patients receiving treatment at the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital.

The humanitarian gesture took place at the hospital’s Dialysis Unit, where the women visited patients and helped cover treatment costs for those facing financial difficulties.

The support was provided as part of activities leading to the national commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026. During the visit, the women spent time encouraging patients undergoing dialysis treatment, many of whom struggle to meet the high cost of kidney care.

Speaking on behalf of the women from the Mining Commission, Commissioner Eng. Theonestina Mwasha said the initiative aimed at showing compassion and bringing hope to patients in need.

“We recognise that many people face different challenges in life.

I would like to thank members of the Mining Commission for their contributions, which have enabled us to assist 14 patients who were experiencing financial difficulties in accessing kidney treatment. This is a moment to encourage them and demonstrate our care and solidarity,” she said.

Eng. Mwasha added that women have a responsibility to nurture communities and extend support to those most in need.

“Giving is an investment in the future, not only for our families but also for the wider community,” she noted.

Another Commissioner, Dr. Theresia Numbi, said the initiative was meant to touch lives and restore hope among patients, noting that kidney treatment remains costly for many Tanzanians.

Receiving the support on behalf of the hospital, Director of Nursing Services Mwanaidi Makao expressed gratitude to the women from the Mining Commission for the timely assistance.

“It is not easy for our patients to undergo dialysis regularly because the cost is very high. We are grateful for this support which will help those in need,” she said.

Meanwhile, kidney specialist Dr. Sabina Mmbali explained that about 60 per cent of kidney patients rely on health insurance to cover their treatment, while the remaining 40 per cent pay from their own pockets.

She added that dialysis treatment is typically required three times a week.

“This support has brought great comfort to our patients, and we are deeply appreciative,” said Dr Mmbali.

Members of the public who witnessed the event praised the initiative by the women of the Mining Commission, describing it as a strong demonstration of compassion, social responsibility and unity within the community as the nation heads towards the International Women’s Day celebrations.
