TANESCO’s Executive Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, has conducted an inspection tour of power projects being implemented in Simiyu Region with the aim of observing the progress of the implementation of the projects and ensuring their timely completion.
The projects inspected include the construction of the Imalilo Power Receiving and Distribution Station and the construction of a 220 kilovolt (220kV) transmission line from Shinyanga to Simiyu.
Speaking immediately after the tour, which took place on February 21, 2026, Mr. Twange said the Imalilo Power Station project began implementation in October, 2025 by the Corporation’s internal experts, and is expected to be completed by May 2026.
“After a long time, we have started implementing this project through our internal experts where we started in October 2025, and we expect to complete it in May 2026,” said Mr. Twange.
He explained that currently the people of Bariadi depend on electricity from the neighboring regions of Shinyanga, Mwanza and Mara, a situation that causes a decrease in the quality of electricity due to the long distance it travels.
He said the completion of the Imalilo Station will eliminate this challenge and strengthen the electricity infrastructure, thus ensuring that the people of Bariadi have access to reliable electricity from June 2026.
“Currently the people of Bariadi depend on electricity from the regions of Mwanza, Mara and Shinyanga, a situation that causes the quality of electricity to decrease. The construction of this station will strengthen the infrastructure and eliminate these challenges from June 2026,” he added.
Currently, the implementation of the Imalilo Electricity Receiving and Distribution Station project has reached 20.75%.
The project costs approximately 8 billion shillings, funds that are 100% funded by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania in the first phase.
