Zanzibar: Members of the Southern African Power Partnership (SAPP) Community, from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, involving more than 16 power companies involved in the generation and distribution of electricity, have met in Zanzibar to discuss and promote efficient use of electricity.
The two-day meeting which began on February 04, 2026, aims to ensure that the electricity available in member countries is used more efficiently and qualitatively, involving less electricity consumption while production continues to increase, in order to increase economic opportunities for the respective countries.
Speaking in an interview with journalists, the Research Manager of the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO), Engineer Samweli Kessy, said that despite the high costs of electricity generation, electricity companies sell electricity at affordable prices to the public, so education on efficient use of electricity is important in saving energy and increasing national income through the sale of electricity abroad.
Engineer Kessy added that efficient use of electricity helps reduce production costs and at the same time contributes to environmental conservation.
He said that for Tanzania, the Ministry of Energy has prepared a Strategy for Efficient Use of Energy for the year 2024 to 2034, which aims to ensure that all citizens are educated on efficient use of electricity, a measure that will reduce living costs and increase the efficiency of electricity service use.
He said that through TANESCO’s Communication Strategy, the organization will continue to use various channels including the media, radio, television, newspapers and face-to-face meetings to reach citizens and stakeholders at all levels.
Engineer Kessy said the plan will involve all customers, from large, medium to small customers at regional, district, ward and village levels across the country.
The two-day meeting is expected to conclude on February 05, 2026.
