By WAF – Dodoma: The Government has officially announced the start of the implementation of Health Insurance for all in the first phase for a group of indigent citizens (elderly, children, pregnant and disabled) who will be funded by the Government and announced a package of essential services that will be provided by Health Insurance schemes at a cost of 150,000/- for a Household of not more than 6 people.
This was stated by the Minister of Health, Mr. Mohamed Mchengerwa on January 23, 2026 in Dodoma City at a meeting to discuss the implementation of Health Insurance for All with Leaders and Executives at the Regional, District and Local Government levels.
Minister Mchengerwa has announced the official start of Universal Health Insurance on January 26, 2026 and urged officials to ensure that citizens receive education before joining and continue to provide quality health services to citizens at health service centers across the country.
Minister Mchengerwa said that at a cost of 150,000/-, 6 people in one household will join Universal Health Insurance which will include a contributing member, the member’s spouse and four (4) dependents.
“The four dependents can be a parent of the member or the parent of the member’s spouse; a child of the member by birth, adoption or foster care who is under the age of twenty-one or a blood relative of the member who is under the age of twenty-one” explained Minister Mchengerwa.
He said that the Essential Services package will be provided based on the referral procedure at health service centers that will enter into an Agreement with the Health Insurance schemes.
Minister Mchengerwa said that in order to achieve the goal of guaranteed medical care for all citizens through Health Insurance, Leaders and Executives must ensure that proper education reaches citizens so that they can know the importance of having Health Insurance.
