WAF, Dar es Salaam: Minister of Health, Mr. Mohamed Mchengerwa, has said that the mobilization of investors in pharmaceutical industries in the country is a national program initiated by the President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s goal is to see Tanzania become self-sufficient in that product but also to be a seller to other countries by 2030.
Minister Mchengerwa said this during his meeting with journalists on the sidelines of the Conference of Medicines and Medical Equipment Manufacturers on January 19, 2026, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, in Dar es Salaam.
“This is a national plan set out within the five-year National Development Plan of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, to ensure that the country has the freedom to produce its own medicines,” said Minister Mchengerwa.
Minister Mchengerwa said the nation has planned to ensure that by 2030, the level of drug production increases from the current 10 percent to 65 percent.
“This plan is a national plan led by the President, so that by 2030, after the President retires, we will be self-sufficient and have increased from 10% to 65% of the production of medicine in the country,” said Minister Mchengerwa.
“Right now we have found more than 40 investment stakeholders from various countries, including Germany, England, the United States and India, who will ensure that all the challenges encountered in the pharmaceutical production sector are resolved because they are well organized”, said Mr. Mchengerwe
Minister Mchengerwa said that with the plans of the Ministry of Health, the Nation will take steps in the production of drugs in the country, which will save the Government’s money used to import drugs abroad and also facilitate the access to drugs for the people.
