The International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) held the online event “Step in Peace: Peru Chapter” on January 10, 2026, engaging youth organization leaders based in Lima, Peru. The event aimed to foster shared understanding on peace and social cohesion while exploring practical, youth-led approaches to peace building. A total of 15 representatives from Peruvian youth organizations participated
Peru’s social landscape has been shaped by a long history that blends indigenous civilizations with colonial influences, resulting in rich cultural diversity alongside persistent structural challenges. Despite maintaining a democratic system, the country continues to face issues such as economic inequality, youth unemployment, and regional disparities. These conditions have contributed to growing social fatigue and uncertainty among younger generations, highlighting the need for youth-centered dialogue and international cooperation.
The program introduced IPYG’s peace vision alongside the peace framework promoted by HWPL, an affiliated global peace NGO, particularly its advocacy based on the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW). Participants then took part in an open discussion under the theme “The Peace I Dream of for Peru,” exchanging perspectives on social tensions and the role of youth organizations. The dialogue emphasized feasible actions and educational linkages rather than abstract opinions.
Yadirha Jhuliana Chávez Caja, a member of Voluntario, stated that peace is a fundamental condition for human well-being and social coexistence. Reflecting on the session held on January 10, 2026, she noted that the discussion revealed a shared awareness and willingness among participants to work toward peace as a common objective.
Daniela Sofía Inchicaque, a member of the Student Council at the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary School, described the meeting as a timely opportunity to reflect on the meaning of peace within Peruvian society. She noted that the discussions emphasized dialogue, mutual understanding, and respect, while clarifying that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but is closely linked to justice, inclusion, and social solidarity.
Building on this event, IPYG plans to explore follow-up initiatives with Peruvian youth groups, including youth peace education programs (YEPC), joint project development, and expanded participation in global youth networks. Through these efforts, IPYG aims to establish a sustainable, youth-driven peace framework that connects local communities with the international peace movement.
