The Minister of Energy, Mr. Deogratius Ndejembi, has said the Government continues to implement various projects to improve the country’s electricity infrastructure with the aim of ensuring that citizens have access to reliable and safe electricity.
Mr. Ndejembi said on January 06, 2026 in Dar es Salaam during his visit to inspect the electricity receiving and cooling stations of Gongolamboto, Kinyerezi, Mabibo and Ubungo.
He said that the Sixth Phase Government under the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has invested more than 280 billion shillings in the implementation of electricity receiving and cooling stations projects as well as electricity transmission lines, to ensure access to reliable electricity for domestic and industrial use, which will help boost the industrial economy.
He said Dar es Salaam is among the areas that consume the most electricity in the country, using an average of 750 megawatts, while the Coast Region uses an average of 100 megawatts, mainly in industrial activities.
Together, the regions consume more than 800 megawatts, a situation that demonstrates the importance of investments being made in improving electricity infrastructure.
Mr. Ndejembi said the Gongolamboto Power Receiving and Cooling Station is being upgraded by replacing the original 50 MVA transformer and installing a transformer with a higher capacity.
He said the project is expected to be completed in July 2026 and will increase access to reliable electricity for residents of Gongolamboto, Mbagala, Kigamboni and surrounding areas that rely on electricity for industrial and commercial activities.
He said the Mabibo Power Receiving and Cooling Station is expected to be completed in August 2026 and will contribute significantly to improving access to reliable electricity in Dar es Salaam.
He urged contractors implementing the projects to ensure that they complete the projects on time, stressing that citizens rely on these essential services.
He also urged citizens to protect and maintain the electricity infrastructure, explaining that a lot of government funds have been invested in these projects with the aim of ensuring electricity is available at all times.
The Managing Director of the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO), Mr. Lazaro Twange, said TANESCO continues to take various steps to ensure that all projects aimed at eliminating challenges in electricity transmission and access are completed on time.
He said the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has invested more than 15 trillion shillings in electricity projects that are being implemented, as part of efforts to improve services due to increased investment and population.
He stressed that the electricity sector is an enabling sector for national development.
Mr. Twange added that the completion of the Mabibo Power Receiving and Cooling Station will increase the capacity to transport electricity from the Kinyerezi and Julius Nyerere Hydroelectric Dam power stations through the Chalinze Station, a move that will reduce the load on the Ubungo Station, reduce dependency and increase the amount of electricity reaching customers in Gongolamboto, Mbagala and other areas of Dar es Salaam City as well as the Nation as a whole.
