Government invests over 280 Billion Shillings in electricity projects

The Minister of Energy, Mr. Deogratius Ndejembi has said that the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has invested over 280 Billion Shillings in various electricity projects to ensure reliable access to energy in Dar es Salaam.

Mr. Ndejembi said on January 6, 2025, during his visit to the Gongo la Mboto, Kinyerezi I Extension and Mabibo power receiving and cooling stations located in Dar es Salaam.

“Dar es Salaam is among the areas that consume the most electricity in the country. If you look at the electricity production we have, almost all 750 megawatts are used in Dar es Salaam alone. This investment made by the Government is aimed at ensuring the availability of reliable electricity for ordinary consumers in homes and industries so that they continue to grow”, said Mr. Ndejembi.

He said the investment also aims to eliminate dependence on a single power plant and instead have enough plants that will completely eliminate the electricity challenge when a fault occurs at the relevant plant.

“The Government’s goal for this investment is to ensure that Dar es Salaam has a ‘ring circuit’ (electricity circuit system) so that when electricity is missing on one side, it can be obtained through another route. This will enable residents of Dar es Salaam and surrounding areas to have reliable electricity at all times”, said Mr. Ndejembi.

TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange said the investment of more than 280 billion shillings in Dar es Salaam is part of more than 15 trillion shillings provided by the Sixth Phase Government to implement various projects to generate, transport and distribute electricity in the country.

“The President has instructed us, he does not want us electricity people to be seen as an obstacle to the development of the people. We thank him for enabling us and all these efforts continue to ensure that electricity continues to be an enabling sector for trade, investment and service delivery”, said Mr. Twange.

This visit by the Minister of Energy is a continuation of his visits to various electricity projects in the country with the aim of determining the progress of the projects and ensuring their timely completion so that Tanzanians continue to enjoy access to reliable electricity services.
