The Deputy Minister of Energy, Ms. Salome Makamba, has said that the expansion project of the Kinyerezi 1 Extension Power Receiving and Cooling Station has been officially completed with the installation of a 175 MVA Transformer.
She said this step is important to improve access to reliable electricity to the City of Dar es Salaam, especially the Mbagala and Gongo la Mboto areas, which have been facing challenges of power outages due to population growth and economic activities.
Ms. Salome said this on December 11, 2025, during her visit to the Kinyerezi I, Kinyerezi II, Ubungo I, Ubungo II and Ubungo III power generation stations, adding that the project has already begun testing.
“We are very grateful to Hon. President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for the huge investment. The transformers have been installed, testing is ongoing and the people of Gongo la Mboto and Mbagala will now have reliable electricity”, Ms. Salome
TANESCO’s Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, said the Corporation continues to improve its infrastructure to meet the increasing demand.
He noted that in the Kinyerezi area, a large 175 MVA transformer has been installed, while the Gongo la Mboto and Mbagala areas are being installed with a 120 MVA transformer to meet the increasing demand for electricity.
He stressed that the population has been increasing in the City of Dar es Salaam, so the electricity infrastructure must be improved regularly to meet the existing demand.
“The goal of Kinyerezi 1 Extension was to increase the capacity to distribute the electricity generated to reach our customers at the appropriate level,” said Mr. Twange.
