Now when you buy electricity, it goes directly into your account – Tanesco

The Minister of Energy, Mr. Deogratius Ndejembi has officially launched smart meters aimed at improving and making it easier for customers to make electricity purchases directly into your account and start using it without having to enter tokens into LUKU.

The move is a major technological transformation being undertaken by TANESCO to increase the efficiency of customer service delivery.

The Minister of Energy, Mr. Ndejembi launched the smart meters on December 05, 2025 at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Center (JNICC) and was attended by various government leaders, energy sector stakeholders and TANESCO executives.

He said the new meters enable customers to get electricity immediately after making token purchases without using an additional number entry unit (CIU), a move aimed at reducing the challenges that were arising in the old system.

“Today we are proud of the great historical step taken by TANESCO as one of the public companies that is doing well in providing services to customers in the country. Smart meters bring a major revolution in the way this Corporation manages revenue collection”, said Mr. Ndejembi.

He said the challenges that customers were facing when introducing tokens are what prompted the Government to make technological reforms.

“This launch sets a big mark for our country in the technological revolution so I direct TANESCO to ensure that it distributes these meters to all areas with high demand and ensures that it complies with international standards in parallel with providing education on the benefits of these meters,” he stressed.

Deputy Minister of Energy, Mrs. Salome Makamba said the launch of Mita Janja is a continuation of the Government’s commitment to improving services to the citizens.

“I am happy to witness this great revolutionary step as it is the 33rd day since His Excellency, President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan came to power. Today we are making important history through the launch of Mita Janja for TANESCO customers,” said Bibui. Salome.

The Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr. Albert Chalamila, has stressed the importance of protecting electricity infrastructure and commended TANESCO for strengthening cooperation with security and defense agencies in controlling acts of vandalism.

“This step should remind us of the great responsibility we have to protect infrastructure. I commend TANESCO for their cooperation with the Police Force in combating vandalism against infrastructure. Continue at this pace so that electricity service is reliably available,” said Mr. Chalamila.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felichesmi Mramba, has commended TANESCO for this timely implementation, explaining that the Mita Janja technology will greatly facilitate the identification of customer challenges before the customer reports to TANESCO.

The Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of TANESCO, Ambassador Zuhura Bundala, said the Board is proud to see the ongoing reforms in improving the services provided by the Corporation and that the board is increasingly encouraged in leading the Corporation to provide better services digitally.
