The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has visited and inspected the progress of the construction of the strategic Zanzibar Sports City project being implemented in the Fumba area, West Urban Region, as part of the preparations for the AFCON 2027 Games.
During the visit, President Dr. Mwinyi assured the Ministry of Information, Arts, Culture and Sports and the ORKUN GROUP Company that the Government has opened the doors to ensure that the construction is carried out quickly, efficiently and in accordance with international standards.
He urged the Ministry and the contractor not to submit challenges late so that the Government can provide quick solutions when needed.
President Dr. Mwinyi was accompanied by the Minister of Information, Arts, Culture and Sports, Mr. Riziki Pemba Juma and the Deputy Minister, Mr. Ali Abdulgullam Hussein. The visit took place on November 18, 2025.
The Zanzibar Sports City project is among the strategic projects being implemented by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar with the aim of strengthening sports infrastructure and promoting the development of the sector in the country.
The first phase of the project includes the construction of an International Football Stadium with a capacity to accommodate 36,500 fans, and two training grounds with a capacity to accommodate 15,000 fans each.
One of the grounds will also be used for National celebrations. The construction of this project is expected to be completed by December 2026.
