Geothermal power is a boon for Tanzania

Mbeya: The Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, Dr. James Mataragio has directed the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) and its subsidiary Geothermal Development Company (TGDC) to ensure that all equipment for verifying geothermal resources in the Lake Ngozi project arrives on time so that verification works can be completed according to the scheduled time.

Dr. Mataragio gave these instructions on October 22, 2025 during his visit to inspect the ongoing works in the project which is located in Rungwe district, Mbeya region.

“This project should be completed on time due to its importance in the country, as we implement these geothermal projects, let us remember that we are also implementing the National Energy Policy of 2015 which states that Tanzania should generate electricity using mixed sources (generation mix) of which geothermal is one.” Dr. said. Mataragio

Regarding the issue of delayed verification equipment arriving at the Lake Ngozi project area which will generate 70 megawatts of electricity, Dr. Mataragio has ordered that all project equipment be purchased and arrive at the project area immediately.

Dr. Mataragio said the implementation of geothermal projects is outlined in the National Energy Compact which ends in 2030 where Tanzania is required to have 130 megawatts derived from geothermal resources.

He said the National Development Vision 2050 directs the country to have mixed sources of electricity generation.

TGDC General Manager, Engineer Mathew Mwangomba said the instructions given by the Government will be implemented effectively to complete the project on time.

He said the progress of verification of geothermal resources in the project, Engineer Mwangomba said has reached 60% to be able to reach geothermal reserves.

“We expect within six months we will complete the verification of all three wells”, said Engineer Mwangomba

During the visit, the Deputy Secretary-General was accompanied by the Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga, and officials from the Ministry of Energy and TANESCO.
