The Mining Commission has continued to educate miners on the use of Retorts, a device that helps protect the health of miners, the environment and reduce the cost of mercury use in gold mining.
Speaking at the 8th National Mining Technology Exhibition underway at Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan Fields, Bombambili in Geita Region, Senior Environmental Officer from the Geita Regional Resident Mining Officer’s Office, Ms. Hyasinta Rugeiyamu, said the Retort is designed with a system that prevents mercury vapor from entering the body during mining, thus protecting the miner from health hazards.
“In addition to protecting health, the Retort also prevents mercury vapor from dispersing into the air. Instead, the vapor is converted into a liquid that is stored and reused. This helps reduce environmental pollution and the cost of purchasing new mercury”, explained Ms. Rugeiyamu.
He said the Mining Commission will continue to encourage miners across the country to use Kigida to ensure mining activities are carried out safely, productively and sustainably.
