Tanzania now to generate nuclear power

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed its interest in assisting Tanzania in its plans to start generating electricity using nuclear energy

This was stated at a meeting on the sidelines of the 69th General Assembly of the Atomic Energy Organization that concluded on September 19, 2025 in Austria.

The meeting was held between the Tanzanian delegation led by Prof. Carolyne Nombo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Director of the IAEA Nuclear Infrastructure Department, Ms. Liliya Dullinet.

The meeting was part of the continuation of the cooperation talks between Tanzania and the IAEA, aimed at accelerating the implementation of the National Plan for generating electricity using nuclear energy.

In the talks, the IAEA has pledged to closely cooperate with Tanzania in several priority areas including Technical and Professional Assistance to assist Tanzania in all aspects of nuclear infrastructure preparation.

Another area is Training for Local Experts in building professional capacity for Tanzanians to participate directly in the preparation and operation of nuclear projects where the IAEA has already provided study opportunities for Tanzania.

The organization has also shown its readiness to assist Tanzania in making improvements to the Legal and Policy Framework by providing guidance in strengthening laws, regulations and guidelines for the management of nuclear projects.

He said that in another step, the IAEA and Tanzania have agreed to jointly prepare a National Action Plan for the Implementation of the Nuclear Power Project starting from the Preparation stage.

The organization has shown its readiness to organize training visits for Tanzanian leaders and experts to gain understanding and exchange experiences on issues of Nuclear technology in power generation.

Speaking at the session, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba thanked the IAEA for their readiness to assist Tanzania.

He said that Tanzania’s commitment to embarking on the journey of generating nuclear power is the implementation of the instructions of the President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan who has placed great emphasis on ensuring the country has sustainable, safe and reliable sources of energy.

Other members who participated in the session were Mha. Joseph Kirangi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Water and Minerals from Zanzibar, Mha. Athuman Kilundumya Deputy Permanent Secretary Agriculture, Prof. Najat Mohamed, Director General of the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC), Mha Innocent Luoga, Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy and Nuclear Experts.
