Austria to bring waste and solar power to Tanzania

The Austrian government through UniCredit Bank has promised to provide the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania with funds amounting to 20 million euros, equivalent to approximately 60 billion shillings, for the implementation of electricity generation projects using solar energy and waste.

This was stated by the Chief Executive Officer of Merl Solar Technologies GmbH, Engineer Hannnes Merl, when he held talks with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba on September 17, 2025 on the sidelines of the 69th General Assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency currently underway in Vienna, Austria.

To begin the implementation of the projects, Engineer Mramba has invited the company to Tanzania to meet with experts and begin making proper preparations for the new electricity generation projects, promising to cooperate in achieving the implementation of the projects.

Engineer Felchesmi Mramba said that Merl company has implemented various solar power projects in the country, saying that “this company has implemented electricity projects in ten (10) villages during the period 2015 to 2017”.

He mentioned the projects as 14 solar power generating containers in the districts of Kongwa in Dodoma region, Mlele in Katavi region and Uyui in Tabora region, where the project cost 16.2 billion shillings.

He said the projects have enabled the provision of electricity to 812 homes and residences, 27 houses of worship, 6 schools and 8 health centers.

Engineer Mramba thanked the Austrian Government for implementing the projects successfully as well as the Austrian Government’s intention to continue cooperation with the Tanzanian Government in the implementation of the National Energy Compact which aims to provide electricity to all Tanzanians by 2030 through a 300 mission plan.

A meeting between the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and the Merl Company was held at the Tanzanian Embassy in Vienna, Austria and was attended by the Tanzanian Ambassador and the Permanent Representative to Austria, Ambassador.
