Archivists must be honest and protect government information

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has called on all archivists in the country to adhere to work ethics, maintain integrity and protect the confidentiality of all information stored as such information is an important resource for national security and the development of the country.

He said that the Tanzania Archives and Records Management Association (TRAMPA) bears a great responsibility to ensure that all important documents and records of the Government as well as private institutions are professionally maintained and preserved.

He made the call, on August 27, 2025 when he opened the 13th General Assembly of the Tanzania Archives and Records Management Association, held at the Diamond Jubilee Conference Hall in Dar es Salaam.

“Proper maintenance of documents and records is the backbone of accountability, history, and good governance. Without effective records, our nation could face major challenges of information loss, decision-making delays, and ultimately set back development efforts”, he said

Mr. Majaliwa said TRAMPA should continue to promote accountability, good governance as well as promote expertise and professionalism in document management and encourage the provision of training and professional guidelines to ensure that all documents are maintained at high levels of confidentiality, accuracy, and security.

The Prime Minister has instructed all Public Institutions that have not yet started using the e-Office system to ensure that they immediately start using this modern technology as the Government has invested in such systems with the aim of reducing paper usage, increasing communication speed and protecting Government secrets.

“Through the e-Office system, various Ministries, Departments, Agencies and Government Institutions have been enabled to use modern digital systems that facilitate access to records, increase transparency and reduce delays in services”, he said.

The Prime Minister said the Sixth Phase Government has continued to pay a total of 252.76 billion shillings in salary arrears of 150,647 civil servants as well as paying 33.29 billion shillings in salary arrears of 10,022 retirees.

The Minister of State, President’s Office, Public Service Management and Good Governance, Mr. George Simbachanwene said the Government has continued to provide employment to public servants including record keepers.

“In the year 2024-2025, only 965 new jobs were created, 1,237 were promoted, 59 employees were re-categorized, and 204.6 million shillings in salary arrears were paid,” said Mr. Simbachawene.

He said the Government recognizes the contribution of the Records and Documents Management cadre to the welfare of the public service and will always continue to provide support to the cadre to continue to achieve various service issues.

The Minister of State in the President’s Office, Constitution, Law, Service and Good Governance of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, Mr. Haroun Ali Suleiman, has commended the members of the party for the great work they are doing in maintaining office secrets in the interests of the Nation.

“In addition, I congratulate you very much for your good decision to build a large and modern building,” said Mr. Suleiman.

He said that in recognition of the importance of the cadre, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar is building a large and modern building for the maintenance of archives which will be inaugurated soon.

“The Government is also currently building new modern buildings and in this we are considering the presence of good offices for the archivists”, he said

The Chairperson of TRAMPA, Mrs. Devota Mrope has congratulated the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for the great work he is doing in various sectors including the Archives and Records Management cadre.

“President Dr. Samia has been TRAMPA’s number one member, he has fought for the interests of public servants including us TRAMPA members, he has provided many jobs in a short period of time including for professionals in this Archives and Records Management cadre, he has worked on our challenges to a great extent”, said Mrope

At the meeting, TRAMPA has presented President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, an ambulance that they have said she herself will decide where it will go for use in the health sector.
