Zanzibar is at the forefront of protecting women’s rights

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said that Zanzibar has made great strides in protecting women’s rights by having good policies and laws that ensure security, gender equality and the existence of safe cities and social spaces.

President Dr. Mwinyi said this when he opened the Seventh World Conference on Safe Cities and Social Spaces and Safety for Women to be held at the Madinat Al Bahr Hotel, Mjini Magharibi Region on August 26, 2025.

He said that the holding of the conference is a sign of the International Community recognizing Zanzibar’s efforts in protecting women and girls through the effective implementation of policies and laws that guarantee their opportunities and well-being.

He informed that the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has prioritized the issue of gender equality by preparing safe cities and social spaces that provide opportunities for women to carry out their social and economic activities without fear, sexual harassment and by being involved in various fields.

President, Dr. Mwinyi has assured citizens, stakeholders and development partners that Zanzibar is a safe country and its citizens continue to carry out their daily activities in peace and tranquility.

He expressed satisfaction with the various steps taken by institutions responsible for protecting women and girls in the country.

President Dr. Mwinyi said Zanzibar has decided to empower women by providing them with a safe environment in the areas where they carry out their activities at all times.

Likewise, President Dr. Mwinyi has thanked UN Women for its strategies and efforts in ensuring that women around the world are protected from acts of violence.

President Dr. Mwinyi has called on stakeholders, regional and international institutions to unite with the aim of developing safe and friendly cities and areas for the development of women
