Late Mkapa is a role model – President Mwinyi

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has stated that Late Mzee Mkapa will remain a role model for the current and future generations due to his great contribution in building the foundations of development, good governance and national prosperity.

He stressed that the Third Phase Government of the United Republic of Tanzania built important pillars of national unity, the Union, peace and solidarity of Tanzanians, as well as Tanzania’s position in the African continent and in the world.

President Dr. Mwinyi said this when he represented the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, at the Special Five-Year Commemoration Ceremony of Late Benjamin William Mkapa, Retired Third Phase President of the United Republic of Tanzania, held on July 23, 2025 in Lupaso, Masasi District, Mtwara Region.

President Dr. Mwinyi recalled that the late Mzee Mkapa was a believer in socialism and a market economy led by the private sector, but he also ensured that development benefited all citizens without discrimination.

He explained that the late Mzee Mkapa was the one who initiated the Development Vision 2025, which has become an important tool in development reforms, and its achievements have been the basis for the launch of the new National Development Vision 2050.

President Dr. Mwinyi has called on religious leaders, politicians and journalists to be part of protecting and promoting the value of peace as a way of honoring the late Mkapa.

He said Tanzanians have reason to be proud of the current leaders who are continuing the vision of the founding leaders and taking Tanzania forward in all aspects of development.

President Dr. Mwinyi visited the grave of the late Benjamin William Mkapa and laid a wreath, accompanied by the Retired President of Mozambique, Mr. Filipe Nyusi and his wife, as well as the widow of the late Mkapa, Mama Anna Mkapa. The late Mzee Mkapa passed away on the night of July 24, 2020 at the age of 81, in Dar es Salaam.
