The Late Mzee Mwinyi Award is a catalyst for media freedom in the country – President Mwinyi

The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has expressed gratitude after receiving the 30-Year Award from the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) on behalf of the Family of the Late Mzee Ali Hassan Mwinyi.

The retired Second-Term President of the United Republic of Tanzania has been awarded in recognition of his contribution to strengthening media freedom in the country.

President Dr. Mwinyi said this, on July 15, 2025, at the Council’s 30th anniversary celebration held at the Arusha International Convention Center (AICC).

President Dr. Mwinyi explained that the award is a testament to the great contribution of the Late Mzee Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who allowed the establishment of private media and provided freedom to journalists, a move that contributed significantly to building and strengthening the media industry in Tanzania.

President Dr. Mwinyi said that the recognition of the contributions of past Presidents, including the Late Julius Kambarage Nyerere and the Late Mzee Ali Hassan Mwinyi, increases the motivation for the current generation to continue being patriots and contributing to the welfare of the Nation.

In his greetings, President Dr. Mwinyi also congratulated the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for her leadership that provides journalists with a better environment to carry out their responsibilities to the Nation and to continue to be close to them in the building of the Nation.

President Dr. Mwinyi urged journalists to use freedom of information to mobilize citizens, promote national solidarity and stimulate economic and social development in the country.

He said the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar will continue to collaborate with the media sector to promote ethics, accountability, integrity and freedom for the citizens.

Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Philip Isdor Mpango, as the guest of honor, emphasized the importance of having effective policies, laws and systems for media management to protect the professionalism of the industry in the 21st century, especially considering the revolution brought about by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.

Dr. Mpango presented Mr. Madaraka Nyerere with the 30th Anniversary Special Award of the Tanzania Media Council (MCT), on behalf of the Family of the Late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere in recognition of the Father of the Nation’s contribution in using the media for the liberation of Southern African Nations, building national unity, and maintaining democracy.

The event was attended by Ministers, various SMT and SMZ leaders, Media Leaders, Representatives of Media Councils from various countries and development stakeholders.
