WMA conducts verification exercise of electricity meters in industries in Dodoma

The Tanzania Measurement Agency (WMA) is conducting an exercise to verify electricity meters installed in various industries in the country to ensure that the Government through the Tanzania Electricity Corporation (TANESCO) receives due revenue and that industrialists pay the actual cost according to the electricity service they use.

The WMA Head Office Manager, Mr. Albogast Kajungu said yesterday while speaking to journalists at the ongoing Public Service Week Exhibition at Chinangali Stadium, Dodoma.

Mr. Kajungu said that so far WMA has inspected more than 2,000 electricity meters with the goal of verifying all meters in use in all industries in the exercise that began in May this year.

“The situation shows that most meters in use in industries are in good condition. A few that we found have deficiencies, we have contacted the relevant authorities to repair them and others to replace them to ensure that the measurements are correct in that area,” said Mr. Kajungu.

He said that the verification exercise involves all electricity meters in use but the Agency has seen fit to start with those in factories because they use a lot of electricity so if they are not correct, there is a possibility of TANESCO or the manufacturers incurring losses.

He said the verification exercise also involves metal products, especially those used in construction as there have been complaints in that area.

Explaining, Mr. Kajungu said the construction sector in this country is growing rapidly where many construction projects implemented by the government use metal products so the WMA has seen fit to increase its efforts to verify those products, especially those produced in local factories to ensure they have the correct measurements.

He said manufacturers are striving to produce in accordance with standards but the Agency’s goal is to ensure that products produced locally continue to have the correct measurements to protect citizens from the harm that may occur from using metal products that do not meet legally acceptable measurements.

In parallel with the verification of electricity meters and metal products, Mr. Kajungu explained that the verification exercise also involves water meters in use as they are the ones with complaints related to bills and others.

He said that in addition to verifying products in use, WMA through the Misugusugu Measurement Center located in the Coast region and other works, verifies new electricity meters and new water meters so that when they are going to be connected to customers, they have been confirmed that their measurements are correct.

Mr. Kajungu used the opportunity to invite citizens to come in large numbers to the Measurement Agency Pavilion to gain knowledge about the various measurements used to protect them in terms of getting value for money when they go to buy products.

The Measurement Agency is one of the Government Agencies responsible for providing consumer protection services through measurement verification, measurement management and providing professional advice for social and economic development.

Mr. Its responsibilities are to protect consumers and the general public through the verification and control of measurements used in trade and other services to ensure that such measurements are accurate and used correctly in accordance with the Measurements Act, Cap. 340, revised in 2002 and its amendments of 2026 and its regulations.
