The ‘Pika Smart’ campaign is launched

Electricity and Energy Commissioner, Engineer Innocent Luoga has launched a national campaign to promote the use of fresh electric cooking energy that goes with the theme of Cooking Smart.

Engineer Luoga has launched the campaign, June 13, 2025 in Dar es Salaam representing the Secretary -General of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba.

The campaign has been organized by Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) under UKAID funding in partnership with the Government through the Ministry of Energy.

Engineer Luoga said the campaign was launched as one of the government’s efforts to ensure it encouraged citizens to use clean cooking energy to achieve the goal of 80 percent of Tanzanians to use clean cooking energy by 2034.

Engineer Luoga has raised the public about the use of clean electricity for electricity, saying that it is safe and cost effective and adds that Tanzania has a lot of electricity and satisfactory demand.

“As we know the Julius Nyerere water hydroelectric dam has been completed and thus leading to the country’s current electricity to about 4,031 megawatts, this electricity has reached all 12, 318 villages in Tanzania so there is every reason for citizens to use clean energy for electricity cooking.” Said the engineer. Speaking on behalf of TANESCO CEO, TANESCO’s Director of Planning and Investment, Engineer Henryfried Byabato said the agency had been encouraging citizens to use clean electricity for cooking electricity due to adequate energy in the country.

He added that technologies have been improved so electric stoves use less energy and efficiently.

This campaign to promote the use of Cook Smart has come at a time when the Ministry of Energy has launched a National Communication Strategy aimed at providing guidance for stakeholders to develop a campaign to promote the use of clean energy for cooking.

He said he had done so in support of the efforts of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, a cadre of fresh cooking energy to ensure Tanzanians move from the use of unclean energy to clean energy.
