National Clean Cooking Energy Communication Strategy Launched

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Dr. Doto Biteko has launched the National Clean Cooking Energy Communication Strategy along with the National Awareness and Education Campaign on the Use of Clean Cooking Energy.

He said the aim of the launch is to increase public awareness about the use of clean cooking energy and thus enable 80 percent of Tanzanians to move to the use of Clean Cooking Energy by 2034.

Launching the Communication Strategy in Dodoma on June 02, 2025, Dr. Biteko has directed that the strategy should not end up sitting in cabinets but be implemented at all levels of Government down to the local level without forgetting the private sector, development stakeholders and the media to be at the forefront in implementing it.

At the launch, Dr. Biteko congratulated the President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for being the number one leader in the use of clean cooking energy locally and internationally, since launching the National Strategy for the Use of Clean Cooking Energy (2024-2034) on May 08, 2024, the use of Clean Cooking Energy in the country has increased from 6% to 16%.

“In confirming the importance he attaches to this issue of Clean Cooking Energy, His Excellency the President has also created a Clean Cooking Energy Unit which has a special role in managing the clean cooking energy agenda and through this unit the Government will continue with various activities including designing and managing projects, as well as overseeing all National campaigns for education and awareness of clean cooking energy”, said Dr. Biteko

Dr. Biteko said the use of unhygienic cooking energy continues to affect the health and lives of many consumers, especially mothers and children under the age of five.

He said that data shows that 2.1 billion people, equivalent to 24.7 percent of the world’s population, do not have access to clean cooking energy, of which 990 million people, equivalent to 47.1 percent of those using unsafe energy, are from Africa.

He said that Africa is forced to fight in this long journey towards the use of Clean Cooking Energy.

Dr. Biteko has urged all stakeholders involved in Clean Cooking Energy to ensure that they prepare and implement campaigns that target specific groups in society, promote public awareness about funding and affordable options, ensure that a clear and understandable message reaches all stakeholders, and develop and strengthen reliable communication channels.

Dr. Biteko has instructed the Ministry of Energy through the Evaluation and Monitoring Unit to conduct quarterly assessments in order to be able to measure the implementation of the National Strategy for the Use of Clean Cooking Energy.

Dodoma Regional Commissioner, Mrs. Rosemary Senyamule has congratulated the President, Dr. Samia for continuing to show that clean cooking energy is not a matter of words but of actions and that is why he is recognized in the world as a leader in clean cooking energy.

Mrs. Senyamule said the issue of Clean Cooking Energy is a priority for Dodoma Region where various efforts are being taken to promote the use of clean cooking energy, citing as an example that in Dodoma Region, currently 9 prisons are already using clean cooking energy, 3 VETA schools and 9 boarding schools while the awareness work is ongoing.

Deputy Minister of Energy, Mrs. Judith Kapinga said that in the past four years, the Energy sector has become prominent for various major issues, including clean cooking energy, explaining that the influence of the President, Dr. Samia has made the clean cooking energy agenda acceptable both domestically and internationally, thus providing assurance of the health safety of the citizens and the environment as well.

Mrs. Kapinga said the launched Clean Cooking Energy Communication Strategy will accelerate clean cooking energy programs and bring about a revolution in shifting from the use of dirty cooking energy to clean cooking energy.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Engineer Felchesmi Mramba said the launch of the National Clean Cooking Energy Communication Strategy is an important step in the implementation of the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy.

He said the Strategy has been prepared by the Ministry of Energy in collaboration with the United Nations Development Fund (UNCDF) under the sponsorship of the European Union (EU) where the Strategy is guided by the national theme, “Clean Cooking Energy, Save Lives and the Environment”,

He said the main objective of the strategy is to increase awareness among citizens and institutions about the importance of using clean cooking energy and other specific objectives are to prepare and implement special campaigns to promote the use of clean cooking energy, ensure that messages with a common goal reach all stakeholders as well as develop and strengthen communication channels.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy and Minerals, Mr. David Mathayo, has commended the President, Dr. Samia for launching the Clean Cooking Energy Wheel, and has also commended Dr. Biteko for his leadership of the Ministry and cooperation with the committee.

The Representative of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports and Chief Government Spokesperson, Mr. Rodney Thadeus, has said that the Ministry will ensure that the launched communication strategy is successfully implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and other stakeholders including the media.

The Presidential Adviser (Clean Cooking Energy and Community Development), Ms. Angellah Kairuki, has commended the government’s efforts in strengthening the use of clean cooking energy, with one example being the launch of a communication strategy that is important in conveying the message to the public about the importance of using clean cooking energy.

Mr. Lamine Diallo, Head of the Resource Unit from the European Union (EU), has commended the Ministry of Energy for this important event of launching the Clean Cooking Energy Communication Strategy and said that it demonstrates in practice the Government’s efforts in improving the lives of citizens through Clean Cooking Energy.

“We encourage Tanzanians to visit our pavilion at the JKCC grounds, learn about conservation, access traditional medicine services, and see firsthand how forests can be a resource for sustainable development for current and future generations,” emphasized Conservator Ally.
