Government has removed more than 20% subsidy on gas cylinders

📌 REA to distribute 200,000 smart stoves at a discount of more than 70%

Deputy Minister of Energy, Mrs. Judith Kapinga has said that the Government has removed a subsidy of 20% to 50% on approximately 452,445 LPG gas cylinders for end users as an effort to promote the use of Clean Cooking Energy.

Mrs. Kapinga said on May 23, 2025 in parliament in Dodoma while responding to a question by Special Seats Member of Parliament, Mrs. Grace Tendega who wanted to know what short-term strategy the Government has to ensure that Rural Citizens use Clean Cooking Energy instead of Firewood and Charcoal.

“Mr. Chairman, the Government through REA will also distribute 200,000 smart stoves at a discount of up to 75% as well as facilitate the installation of clean energy cooking systems in Public Institutions that serve more than 100 people”, said Mrs. Kapinga

He said the Government has completed the work of electrification in all villages and is now continuing to encourage the use of electric cooking stoves as one way to encourage the use of clean energy for cooking by rural residents instead of using firewood and charcoal.

Mrs. Kapinga said the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy is 10th but the Government has a strategy for efficient use of energy which also involves the private sector to help encourage the use of clean energy for cooking.

Responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Mbulu, Mr. Zacharia Isaay who asked how the Government has planned to ensure that all the Subdistricts targeted in this budget year are reached with electricity within the remaining one month.

Mrs. Kapinga said the Government has various strategies and projects to provide electricity to Subdistricts.

She said one of the strategies is to provide electricity to 15 Subdistricts in each Constituency and the Government has also come up with a strategy to provide electricity to 20,000 Subdistricts where the first phase starts providing electricity to 9,000 Subdistricts and the current stage is the search for contractors.

Responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Special Seats, Mrs. Anatropia Theonest who asked when the Government’s subsidized price began to be used due to gas cylinders continuing to be sold between 22,000/- and 25,000 shillings and for large 15 kg cylinders and 50,000/- and 60,000/-.

Mrs. Kapinga said that for urban areas, the Government has provided subsidies of up to 25% and for rural areas, it is between 50% and 75%, giving an example if a canister was sold for 45,000 shillings/- at the subsidized price, it is available for 17,000 shillings/- to 21,000 shillings/- and saying that it is more than half of its price.

She said that in each District there are approximately 3,255 canisters available for subsidies and adding that the strategy has just begun.

Responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Special Seats, Mrs. Yustina Rahhi who asked about the Government’s plan to provide the pastoralist community with biogas technology or build stoves that use gas manure which is easy, Mrs. Kapinga said that the Government is implementing the project through the European Union (UNCDF fund) which has the technologies he mentioned, Member of Parliament.

Responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Nyang’wale, Mr. Hussein Amar who asked about the Government’s plan to provide clean cooking energy to 19 Secondary Schools and 12 boarding Secondary Schools in Nyang’wale District to protect the environment, Ms. Kapinga said the Ministry of Energy has a plan to provide clean cooking energy to public institutions in collaboration with RALGM.

Mrs. Kapinga has advised Councils to install clean cooking energy systems in existing institutions in the Councils they manage using local revenues.
