Dar es Salaam: The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has received a visit from the Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe (MSD) who arrived in the country for a study tour aimed at learning various issues related to weather services.
The visit is part of MSD’s efforts to improve their services by learning from TMA, an institution recognized for its great achievements in strengthening weather services in Tanzania and Africa in general.
The visit has chosen TMA due to its significant contribution to the development of weather services, including the use of modern technologies, regional and international cooperation, as well as the provision of accurate and timely information to the public and various stakeholders.
TMA has expressed its pleasure with the visit and promised to continue collaborating with other institutions in Africa with the aim of improving weather services and addressing the challenges of climate change.
TMA was established in accordance with the Meteorological Authority Act No. 2 of 2019, through Government Proclamation No. GN 459 of June 14, 2019.
This authority is responsible for coordinating, controlling and providing meteorological services in the United Republic of Tanzania.
Initially, meteorological services in the country were provided by the Tanzania Meteorological Agency, which was established in accordance with the Executive Agencies Act, Cap. 245, reference year 2022.
Prior to the establishment of the agency, these services were provided by the Directorate of Meteorology, which was established in 1977, following the dissolution of the East African Community.
The department carried out the role of providing information and monitoring of the country’s weather.
Before that, these services were provided under the colonial institution that was ruling at the time.
TMA is under the Ministry of Transport and manages the National Meteorological Academy located in Kigoma, which provides professional training for meteorologists in the country.
